Sandbur, also called burgrass or sand-burgrass, grows up to 2 feet tall. Its narrow, yellow-green leaf blades are 2 to 5 inches long and may be rough on the upper surface. The flattened stems may grow upright or spread along the soil. When growing in mowed lawns, the plants form low mats. From July to September, seeds are produced inside spiny burs. Each bur contains only two seeds, but one plant may produce as many as a thousand seeds. Seeds are spread to new areas when the burs cling to clothing and animals. Sandbur is most troublesome in lawns with light, sandy, well-drained soils.

Solution Advice

Sandbur plants can be removed by hand if handled carefully with gloves.
