The leaves of this perennial grass, also known as muhly, are flat, smooth, bluish-green, and up to 2 inches long. The wiry stems grow up to 10 inches, first outward, then upward. Seeds are produced from August to October, lie dormant in the soil for the winter, and sprout in late spring. Plant tops become dormant with the first killing frost in the fall, then begin growth again late the following spring. Nimblewill invades moist lawns, gardens, and unplanted areas that have rich, gravelly soil.

Solution Advice

Nimblewill is easiest to kill when it is a seedling, from late spring to early summer. In vegetable gardens, remove the weeds by hand-digging.
