Cockroaches infest the kitchen, bathroom, porches, and other areas of the home. These flat, shiny insects range in size from 1/2 to 13/4 inches long. They may be light brown, golden tan, reddish brown, or black. In large numbers, they emit a bad odor. Cockroaches are rarely seen during the day. They seek out dark, protected areas in which to live and breed.
Eliminate food sources by keeping the kitchen and other areas of the home free of food scraps. Clean up the kitchen after each meal and store food in tightly sealed metal, glass, or heavy plastic containers. Empty household garbage and pet litter regularly. Clean up water puddles or moist areas around the kitchen, basement, and other infested areas. Plug cracks around baseboards, shelves, cupboards, sinks, and pipes with putty or caulk.
