Dallisgrass grows in spreading clumps with deep roots. Its coarse leaves are 1/2 inch wide and 4 to 10 inches long. Seeds grow from the top of 2- to 6-inch stems from May to October, lie dormant over the winter, and sprout very early in the spring. The grass also reproduces by underground stems. Dallisgrass grows across the Southern states in lawns, gardens, and fields. It prefers moist soil but will tolerate any type. It grows most vigorously in warm summer weather but remains green in winter.

Solution Advice

Patches of dallisgrass can also be killed by covering them with black plastic sheeting for a year.
