A weed with hairy stems 4 to 12 inches long spreads over the lawn. The heart-shaped leaves are also hairy. The taproot is difficult to pull from the soil. Mallow, also called cheeseweed, is found throughout the U.S It is most commonly found in poorly managed lawns and in soils high in manure content. It is often mistaken for ground ivy, but its spreading branches do not root when they contact soil.
