Foxtails are summer annual grasses that grow 1 to 2 feet tall. In a mowed lawn, they will form low mats. The leaves are flat, 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide and 2 to 6 inches long. Groups of bristles 2 to 4 inches long appear from July to September. The bristle resembles a fox''s tail and contains seeds that sprout from mid-spring to early summer. Foxtails are often mistaken for crabgrass, but foxtails clumps are smaller. Foxtails are found in yards with rich soil that border fields, roadways, and other unmaintained areas.

Solution Advice

Foxtails can also be successfully removed by hand.
