Shepherd''s purse, also called lady''s purse or shepherd''s bag, grows in lawns, landscaped beds, unplanted areas, and fields throughout the U.S. It tolerates most types of soil but will not grow in the shade. Arrow-shape leaves and tiny white flowers grow on stems 3 to 18 inches tall. Flowers bloom and produce seeds in triangular pods from March to December. The seeds fall to the soil and may remain dormant for several years before germinating in the spring. In warm-winter areas, seeds may germinate in the fall.
Shepherd''s purse can also be hand-pulled or hoed.
