This popular grass substitute in the South and West sometimes becomes a weed when it creeps into nondichondra lawns and landscaped beds. Dichondra is a broadleaf perennial with 1/4- to 1/2-inch, heart-shaped leaves. The creeping stems root wherever the nodes touch the soil. Inconspicuous flowers produce seeds that may remain in the soil for many years before sprouting. Dichondra will not grow where temperatures fall below 25°F. It grows in sun or shade and prefers fertile soil in areas watered frequently.

Solution Advice

Dichondra has shallow roots and can be removed by hand from landscaped beds and other areas. Regrowth may occur from underground stems; cultivation can control it.
