The newest leaves are curled and discolored, and twigs are often twisted. Leaves may drop off. A shiny or sticky substance may coat the leaves. A black sooty mold often grows on the sticky substance. Tiny green, brown, or purplish soft-bodied insects cluster on the leaves and stems. Ants may be present.
Spray with an insecticide labeled for aphids, following label directions.
