In summer and fall, a low-growing grassy weed with reddish purple stems 1 to 3 feet long grows in the lawn. The smooth leaves are 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, with a prominent midrib. Barnyardgrass is a warm-season annual weed usually found in poorly managed lawns of low fertility. Although the natural growth habit of barnyardgrass is upright, when mowed regularly it forms ground-hugging mats.
Improve soil fertility and maintain a dense, healthy lawn by following recommended lawn care practices.
