Squash and pumpkin leaves wilt and may turn black and crisp. Bright-green or dark-gray to brown, flat-backed bugs, about 1/2 inch long, cluster on the plants.
Squash bugs are elusive and difficult to control. Handpick the bugs and crush egg masses. Trap adults by laying boards on the ground and destroying bugs that congregate under them during the day. Treat the plants with an insecticide labeled for squash bugs, following label directions. Plant only varieties that are resistant to attack by squash bugs.
