Horsetail is a perennial that grows in wooded areas, along roadsides, and on stream banks with wet, sandy, or gravelly soil. Unbranched stalks, topped by 1- to 4-inch cones, appear in April and May. The cones are filled with pale-green to yellowish spores. Horsetail reproduces from these spores as well as from rhizomes. From late spring until fall, hollow stalks grow 1 to 3 feet tall, with 4- to 6-inch branches at the joints.

Solution Advice

Horsetail can also be killed with weedblock fabric or black plastic mulch left in place for several months during the growing season.
