Cream-colored worms up to 1/2 inch long, with reddish brown heads and black spots, are feeding in the immature nuts, many of which fall to the ground prematurely. Later in the season, after the shells have hardened, the worms may be found in the green shucks.
Clean up and destroy all dropped nuts and shucks to eliminate many of the overwintering larvae.
