The needles are partially chewed, or the entire branch is defoliated. Gray-green, tan, or black caterpillar-like larvae, up to 1 inch long, are found on the needles. Larvae may live as single individuals or in large colonies.
Apply an insecticide labeled for this pest, following label directions. Inspect the trees periodically during the growing season for new infestations before severe defoliation occurs.
