Great Lawns, Great Lakes

Protect Our National Treasure

Caring for your lawn means caring for the environment, especially when it comes to our rivers, lakes, and streams.  The Great Lakes contain one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water -- and more than 90 percent of the United Stages's supply.

Scotts Miracle-Gro has partnered with the Alliance for the Great Lakes to protect this treasured resource, and we invite you to join this effort by caring for your lawn responsibly.

Stewardship Begins in Your Backyard

  • Mow high:  Longer grass is stronger grass, as it shades the soil, prevents weed seed germination, grows deeper roots and better absorbs and filtres rainfall.

  • Return clippings:  Mulching recycles organic matter and nutrients back into the soil where microbes and earhworms thrive.  Rich soil helps absorb and filter rainfall, reducing erosion and runoff.

  • Use the right fertilizer:  For mature lawns, choose a fertilizer that is low in phosphorous or phosphorus-free, unless a soil test shows a need for more.

  • Clean up:  Keep grass clippings and fertilizer off sidewalks, roadways, and other hard surfaces, and out of waterways.

  • Reduce Runoff
  • Lawns help reduce runoff and prevent soil erosion, capturing and filtering rainwater to recharge our groundwater supplies.
  • Clear Air
  • Lawns help clean the air, trap dirt and remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
  • Cool Factor
  • Temperatures above lawns in the summer can be up to 30 degrees cooler than above paved areas, reducing summer energy needs.
  • When to Water
  • If you need to water your lawn, the best time is in the morning.
