Everybody loves surprises. That's why planting bulbs in containers is so much fun. For hardly any work, you can surprise yourself with a splendid splash of color by planting bulbs in containers. Place them on your deck or patio, or put some by your front door. When you plant spring bulbs in the fall, and summer bulbs in the spring, you can feast your eyes on fabulous color for an entire growing season.

Find the Right Home for Your Bulbs
Choices, choices, choices. Pots and containers come in so many colors, shapes, and sizes, it's hard to decide which ones to go with. If you want to put bulb containers on your patio or deck, make sure that they're at least 16 inches across for impressive color. Containers placed elsewhere should be at least 8 inches across. How deep your containers should be depends on the size and type of bulb you want to plant. When you choose your containers, remember the weather. Frost can damage terra-cotta containers, but usually won't harm plastic ones. Just keep that in mind when you make your selection. Also, don't forget to choose containers with drainage holes.
The Easy Part: Prepping the Pot
Different kinds of bulbs require different soil depth. Generally speaking, bigger bulbs go in deeper than smaller ones. But, before you get your bulbs out of the package, put in a layer of about three inches of Miracle-GroŽ Moisture Control Potting Mix. This helps control how much watering you'll need to do. For variety, add a layer of larger bulbs and cover them with three inches of potting soil. Then you can add a layer of smaller bulbs. If space permits, add another two inches of potting soil lay down some more bulbs. You'll love the results
Watering and Feeding
Water after you plant the bulbs and add some OsmocoteŽ Plus Multipurpose Plant Food. Keep checking the soil for moisture about every week or so. You'll find that watering lightly every week should keep the soil just right. Soon, you'll have beautiful blooms in your containers with hardly any work.
