Although purslane has a lush and somewhat attractive growth, this summer annual can be more trouble than it's worth. Some consider it a delicious vegetable, and others see its pesky growth as interfering with other, more desirable crops. It prefers loose, sandy soils, but purslane can tolerate compacted areas and drought climates. You'll find it all over the US, frequently paired with your summer gardens.
Purslane spreads quickly because of its plentiful seed production. During one season, a single plant may produce up to 240,000 seeds. After initial germination from February to March, seedlings begin flowering within a few weeks. Although it is an annual plant, if its seeds are left in most areas, they can sprout anywhere from 5 to 40 years after dispersal. If left in damp nutrient-rich soil, its broken stems can re-root, causing another infestation.
Purslane can be removed by hand, but make sure to clear out all plant pieces to avoid reinfestation. This low-growing weed can be more effectively treated with a Roundup® Brand Weed & Grass Killer. Be careful to apply just to your purslane infestation, since this product will damage your lawn or garden plants.
Purslane's thick, fleshy leaves resemble those of a jade plant. They have a waxy texture and a round shape. Each reddish stem branches out from a central root system, creating a matted plant that is 1 foot in diameter. Each yellow flower sprouts singly among the succulent leaves, and opens widely during sunny mornings.
