Nimblewill is a native grass that lives in much of the eastern part of the country. It prefers damp, rich soil in shady areas, but can live in sunny spots, too. The plant sets seeds in the fall and goes dormant till spring.
Where it's shady and moist, this hardy native weed will seek a home. Nimblewill is an aggressive plant, but it can be controlled by several means, including changing the conditions in your yard. Here are some effective methods you can use.
If your lawn or garden is damp, it's prime real estate for nimblewill. Find the cause for the dampness. You can amend your soil with compost for better drainage. Also, try diverting any water runoff that finds its way to your trouble spot. You can do this with a small dry stream bed or ditch.
Nimblewill can live in sunlit areas, but it really thrives in shade. Try removing branches of overhanging trees to increase the amount of sunshine. Your grass will improve and your soil will dry out enough to make it harder for nimblewill to take hold.
A well-fed lawn is better able to compete against nimblewill. Thick stands of grass blades won't allow the weed to establish itself.
Nimblewill's roots are shallow, so you'll have success pulling it out.
If nimblewill is too well established for hand-pulling, treat with a non-selective herbicide, such as Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer. Just make sure you protect desirable plants when you use it.
