After plants have matured, apply a pre-emergent weed preventer throughout your garden bed.
PlanBring in the kid committee and decide which vegetables, herbs, and spices to grow. Tomatoes, peppers, oregano, and basil come to mind. Next, decide on containers or a garden bed.
Prepare the SoilYou want rich, crumbly soil without clumps for your garden. Remove any stones or debris from the soil, then add Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables or Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice® Garden Soil. Add about 4" of Miracle-Gro soil on top of your existing soil, and work it in with a rake, hoe, or tiller.
PlantPut in your plants according to the instructions on the seed packets or plant containers, and be sure to give them some space.
Water and FeedTo help your young plants grow vigorously, give them plenty of water and plant food. You can do both at once with a Miracle-Gro® LiquaFeed® Ready-to-Use Plant Feeder. Another option is using Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice All-Purpose Organic Plant Food, followed by a healthy dose of water.
Mulch and Prevent WeedsProtect your plants by putting down a layer of mulch. It will keep weeds from cropping up and will help your garden retain moisture. A two-inch layer should do the trick.
