Climate has a lot to do with what kind of seed to put down. Choose the highest quality grass seed that is 99.99% weed-free like Scotts® line of premium products. They have ten times less weeds than the competition. If you live south, choose the type that works best for your area like Scotts® Turf Builder® Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix, a special blend of tall fescue and Scotts® patented Thermal Blue Kentucky bluegrass that can withstand heat and spread to grow 33% thicker guaranteed. If you live north, choose Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed with Water Smart with a tall fescue or bluegrass. There are also varieties for shade, traffic areas, and sunny spots.
Overseeding is the one time you should mow your lawn short. That will allow the seed to find the ground when you spread it. You can always aerate the lawn to increase the soil contact for your seeds prior to overseeding.
Use a spreader to lay down your seed. Spread Scotts® Starter® Fertilizer to help new grass grow thicker and quicker. When you're done, it's essential to give the seeds a good soaking to get them growing.
