You want to see everything your garden has to offer before you start making changes. Perhaps there are bulbs waiting to burst out in the spring that you didn't know were there. Maybe a corner of your yard has more shade than you thought. Give yourself a full year to inspect and take mental notes. Meanwhile, you can plant some annuals and pull out any shrubs that you don't like.
If you can't resist putting something into the soil, try planting a container garden. This will help you try out a few ideas for a permanent change. Also you can add a dash of color here and there to personalize your yard. You can even grow vegetables in your containers to see where they'll thrive before you create a garden bed.
As you watch your garden, you'll see what works and what doesn't. You'll have some terrific ideas and a few you'll want to forget. As you weed, water, mulch, and care for your landscaping, you'll learn a lot about how to make it your own. It takes time, so don't feel the need to rush right in, as there is a lot to learn about gardening. Above all, have fun and don't get frustrated.
