Hooray, it's on its way and should arrive shortly.
Plants vary with how much soil they need. So you'll need a variety, depending on what you want to grow. Salad greens, radishes, green onions, and herbs only need about five inches of soil to thrive. Tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers need 12-16 inches. You can find beautiful planters made of redwood or plastic that work well for veggies. Just make sure that they have drainage holes.
Lots of vegetables are suitable for containers. Better yet, many of them have been developed exclusively for small gardens. You can grow your plants from seeds, or buy seedlings. Tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers tend grow better when you start them out as seedlings.
To promote root growth and good drainage, plant your garden in a quality potting soil, such as Miracle-Gro® Moisture Control Potting Mix. You can jumpstart your plants with a light feeding after you put them in the soil. Container gardens tend to dry out faster than the earth-bound variety. So be sure to water daily or even twice a day when it's really hot.
