Black medick (sometimes spelled "black medic") thrives in weak turf and compacted soil, like that of high-traffic areas surrounding sidewalks and curbs. In most places black medick is a summer annual, but under some conditions, it can survive all year. You'll find black medick growing in sunny, dry soil throughout the US.
Black medick spreads easily by seed, especially in areas with cool summers and mild winters. Its taproot extends deep into the soil, making it hard to remove completely by hand. This ground-hugging plant produces viable seed at low levels, so frequent mowing will not prevent an infestation.
The best defense from infestation is a thick, healthy turf. Black medick is more active in lawns low in nitrogen, so use nitrogen-rich fertilizers to prevent weed establishment. Keep your soil aerated and your lawn at least 2 1/2 inches long. Apply a Roundup® Brand Weed & Grass Killer to any weeds you find. Spot-treating will cause turf damage. You'll have to reseed afterwards.
Amidst the bushy growth, clusters of yellow flowers grow on top of short, reddish stems. In the fall, the flowerheads are replaced by seed pods, which turn black upon maturity. Surrounding the flowers are jagged, trifolate leaves. Their dark green color and oval shape make them look much like the common clover.
