Select the Right PlantDo a little homework to find the right tree or shrub for your area. Make sure you pick one that stays small. Azaleas, Holly, and Japanese Maples are good choices; Redwoods are not.
Choose a Large-Enough ContainerA container should be big enough to give your plant ample room for its roots. A container
that is 14-16 inches in diameter should do just fine for a small tree or shrub. Just make sure
your container has drainage holes, and drill in a few if it doesn't.
Plant Your Tree or ShrubPut some good potting soil in your container, enough for you to place the top of your plant's roots at the desired level. A good potting soil has a mix of materials such as sphagnum peat moss, compost, and a wetting agent. You'll find all that in Miracle-Gro® Potting Mix, as well as a continuous-release plant food that feeds for up to three months.
Container plants tend to dry out faster than plants in the ground, so water your tree or
shrub regularly. Make sure you water until you see some seeping out of the drainage
holes.
Feed your container tree or shrub with balanced plant food, such as Miracle-Gro® All Purpose
Plant Food.
