Water Well, and Watch It Grow

Evaluate the Amount of SunlightThe rule of thumb for even shade-tolerant grasses is that they need at least four hours of sun per day. If your shady spot gets less than that, you may need to prune back some of the nearby trees.
Find a Grass Seed That Works Well in ShadeDepending on where you live, there are seed mixes that are designed to thrive in shade. If you live north, try a fescue blend. If you live south, a St. Augustine seed should do just fine. Many seed varieties, such as Scotts® Turf Builder® Dense Shade Mix, will tell you whether they work in your area.
Plant the Grass SeedPlanting grass seed is simple procedure. Rake the ground, spread your grass seed, and lightly cover it with a quality soil, such as Scotts® Turf Builder® Seeding Soil. Check out your product bag for specific instructions for your seed type. When you plant seed around trees, remember that they are hungry and thirsty, and will compete with grass for water and nutrients. Be sure to feed your grass around trees, and be a bit more generous with your water.
