Maintaining Your Driveway Garden

Choose Your LocationYou're going to build a bottomless box to frame your garden. So choose a five-foot square area by the driveway or the mailbox.
Prepare the SiteFive square feet of your beautiful lawn is in the way. It's got to go. Spray the area with Round-Up® Weed and Grass Killer.
Select the Right LumberYou want weather-resistant lumber to enclose your garden. You can either cut the pieces to size yourself, or have someone at the building-supply store do it for you.
Building the SupportEven if you're not handy with tools, putting the pieces together to shape your garden is easy. 1. Start with 8 pieces of lumber that measure 2"x6"x58". 2. Create two rectangles by butting the lumber together at 90-degree angles. 3. Stack the rectangles and fasten them with 2"x4"x11" upright pieces at regular intervals. 4. Fasten 2"x2"x11" upright pieces at the corners, and attach 2"x4"x11" upright pieces next to the corners for added support. 5. Attach 2"x2" pieces along the bottom edges in between the 2"4" uprights. 6. Form a ledge by attaching 2"x4"x60" lumber along the top edge.
Fill InNow you're ready to shovel in composted material to cover the bottom of the garden. Remember, native or topsoil may contain weed seeds and too much clay. Add 6 inches of clean garden soil, such as Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil for Flowers & Vegetables on top, then mix the two materials.
PlantingYou can add many different kinds of plants, depending on your style and personality. Plant
your bulbs first if you're using them. Follow up with your perennials and annuals. Some people
have better luck putting the taller plants in the middle and the smaller plants along the
sides.
