    It's Time To Look Beyond the Chinese Wisteria

    Unless you've hiked in the deep woods, or canoed down remote rivers, you may never have seen some of the showiest plants in the country. Native vines such as Leather Flower, Jersey Peach, Groundnut, and White Maypop aren't usually found at the local lawn and garden center. However, they are available from reputable online nurseries. That's good news, because these vines can help make your landscaping spectacular. Better yet, your neighbors won't have anything like it. Here are some ideas to make your yard even more inviting.

    Do You Have a Bare Fence? Let Jersey Peach Run Along It

    Jersey Peach is a yellow trumpet vine that flowers generously. Hardy in zones 4-9 and happy in full to partial sun, this vine can grow 40 feet. Nail some lattice to your fence and train the vine to grow horizontally. Soon, you'll have a green wall dotted by beautiful yellow flowers. It's the perfect backdrop to any flower garden.

    Run Native Vines Over Arches and Trellises

    You can make a spectacular entryway to your secret garden with an arch covered with trumpet vines or red crossvines. They create a green, flowery cavern. You can place trellises against your house or leave them free-standing in your garden. Either way, the local hummingbirds will thank you.

    Plant Dutchman's Pipe Vines for Shade

    If you want to create a shady spot in a place that bakes in the sun, plant a sunscreen with Dutchman's Pipe. This vine features big, glossy leaves that soak up the sun, leaving you cool and refreshed. Another option is Wild Yam.

    Trellis chairs are garden benches with high backs that serve as trellises. Weave a leather flower vine through the trellis, and you'll have a delightful hiding place.
