Swiss chard seems to have an identity problem. It's similar to spinach, but is actually part of the beet family. It's a versatile leafy vegetable for salads and cooked dishes, but its colorful leaf veins and stalks make it a beautiful addition to flower beds or container gardens. Whatever attracts you to Swiss chard, though, give it a try. It's easy to grow, even in hot weather.
Swiss chard grows best in soil that is rich, well drained, and slightly alkaline. Before planting, amend your soil with a 2-inch layer of compost or other organic matter, such as Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice® Garden Soil.
Plant seeds ½ inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows 2 feet apart. As seedlings develop, thin them to 12 inches apart. You can even use the seedlings in soups or salads.
When your Swiss chard plants reach 6 inches tall, feed them with a high-nitrogen, water-soluble plant food, such as Miracle-Gro® Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food. Keep the soil moist and remove weeds. A layer of organic mulch will help maintain soil moisture and curtail weed growth.
Chard can be harvested throughout the summer, starting with the outer leaves when plants are about 5 inches tall. Removing outer leaves will encourage the growth of tender new inner leaves. Cut the whole plant to the ground before a hard freeze.
