If you want to establish an exotic look in your yard, planting a palm tree can help you achieve it. There are plenty to choose from that could work in your area. Short ones, tall ones, desert ones, and cold-hardy ones grow well in different parts of the country. Here's how you can plant palms in your backyard oasis.
The right place for your palm will vary, depending on what type of tree you have. Some grow tall and fast; others need shoulder room. While different species require different exposure to sun, most prefer temperatures above 60 degrees. Be sure to find out what kind of space your tree will require as it grows.
Once you've purchased your palm tree, be sure to keep the root ball moist but not saturated. Dig a hole that's twice as wide as your root ball, and deep enough so that to allow you to create a mound in the center. Place the root ball on the mound and backfill with a mixture of one part native soil and one part Miracle Gro® Garden Soil for Palm Cactus & Citrus. This contains wetting agents, nutrients, and plant food that will feed your palm for 3 months.
Many experts feel that adding a certain kind of fungus can help promote root growth. Palm trees and mycorrhizal fungi form a nice working relationship under the soil, each helping the other to grow well. If you add it, work it into your soil mix prior to planting.
For 2-3 weeks after you've planted your palm, keep it well watered. Wrapping a soaker hose around the root area will keep the root area moist while saving water. After the plant becomes established, you can cut back soak-watering your palm to about 15 minutes, twice a month. Cut back on the watering during the winter months.
Palms have certain nutritional needs that other trees may not. They depend on good supplies of magnesium, iron, and manganese to keep fronds from yellowing or curling. To keep your palm nice and green, sprinkle Miracle-Gro® Shake 'n Feed Continuous Release Palm Plant Food early in the season and then every 3 months. Work it into the top 1-3 inches of soil around the roots, and then water thoroughly.
