Here's a great PR stunt from the old days. The folks at Scotts got tired of hearing people say "I can't have a decent lawn because I have poor dirt." So here's what they did. They laid sod grown from Scotts grass seed on concrete, fed it regularly with Turf Builder and kept it watered.

This is a 1978 photo of me holding up a corner of the lawn so visitors to Scotts could see the concrete. (You are welcome to make fun of my hair and beard as long as you send me a picture of you from the 70's so I can do the same to you.) The lawn thrived for around 16 years until Scotts believed they had made their point:
You do not need great soil to have a great lawn as long as you plant the best grass seed you can buy, feed it about 4 or 5 times a year with one of the Scotts Turf Builder products and of course keep it watered.
